A young family of seven, displaced by a house fire, found solace and hope at Scott Missionâs food bank. Their journey began a year ago when their lives were upended by tragedy, and they ended up at a shelter in the area. With no food and nowhere else to turn, they sought help from the community.
âWe moved here about a year ago,â explains Austin. âWe had no food, nothing.â The family relied on the kindness of friends who guided them to Scott Mission. âOur friend told us what places we could access,â he continues. âWe signed up, and then every month since then, weâve been coming here.âÂ
Scott Missionâs food bank provides a lifeline for this family â ensuring that their children go to bed with full tummies and wake up to have breakfast. Alexis says, âYou buy a bag of milk, eggs, bread, and sliced cheese, there goes $25. Weâre a family of seven. That means our kids eat, and we donât.â

Formula for their youngest child was a critical need, but the cost was too much. âThere were times when formula was $40-$50,â recalls Alexis. âWe couldnât afford it every two weeks.â Desperate, they called the Mission, and the response was always, âWe have some, you can drop by to pick it up.â Â
While the stigma around seeking help weighed heavily on their hearts, they learned an essential lesson: âIf you need the help, donât be shy,â says Austin. âEverybody needs help at times and people shouldnât be afraid to ask for it.â
âItâs like a home away from home. You come in here, and everyoneâs just ready to help you."
Inside the food bank, they found more than just sustenance. âItâs a relief,â says Austin. âItâs like a home away from home. You come in here, and everyoneâs just ready to help you. They ask you if you need anything.â The compassion of the Mission has had a profound impact on this family. âEveryoneâs equal here,â Austin emphasizes. âThatâs the best thing about Scott Mission.âÂ
The emotional impact of being supported when in need is comforting. âKnowing that weâre coming here to see a smile and get that helpâit makes you feel good,â says Alexis. âIt makes you feel better. When youâre leaving here, youâre like, âOkay, weâre going to be good today. Weâre going to eat.ââ
