More Than a Meal: Finding Community and Purpose at Scott Mission

By September 15th, 2026No Comments

For several years, Michael has been visiting Scott Mission for meals, community, and a sense of belonging. Living on a limited income through Ontario Works, he says the support he receives goes far beyond helping meet practical needs. Scott Mission provides something equally important: a place where he feels welcome, valued, and connected to others.

“Great food, great people,” Michael says when describing his experience. While nutritious meals are important, what keeps him coming back is the community he has found.

“Just having somewhere to go and to talk with people… that’s very important. Community.”

For many people facing financial hardship or social isolation, the simple act of sharing a meal can open the door to meaningful relationships. Michael appreciates the kindness shown by staff and volunteers and says he consistently feels respected.

“The staff, the volunteers are always nice and respectful. They treat people good.”

Having a place to belong has also brought structure and purpose to Michael’s daily life. He explains that knowing he has somewhere to go each day gives him motivation and a reason to get out of bed.

“It’s great because I wake up and I have somewhere to go. Having a place to come, it gives purposefulness.”

For individuals living on very limited incomes, everyday expenses can create difficult choices. Michael explains that after paying essential bills, resources for food and transportation can quickly disappear. The support he receives through Scott Mission helps ease some of that burden and provides stability during challenging times.

“What I’m left with after rent and hydro is transportation and food… and the place helps with the other two…food and clothing.”

But Michael believes the impact extends beyond his own situation. He sees places like Scott Mission as an important source of community, helping people find connection, encouragement, and hope during difficult seasons.

Beyond meeting immediate needs, Michael believes acts of kindness can create a ripple effect throughout a community. The support he has received has left a lasting impression on him, inspiring him to encourage others to do the same.

“Pay it forward. Someone does something good for you, do something good for someone else.”

Stories like Michael’s remind us that a meal is often just the beginning. Around tables and through everyday conversations, people find more than nourishment. They find friendship, belonging, encouragement, and dignity. For some, it is a place to reconnect with others. For others, it is a reminder that they are seen, valued, and not alone.

Through the generosity of donors, volunteers, and community partners, Scott Mission continues to be a welcoming community where practical support and genuine relationships come together, creating space for hope, connection, and lasting change.

Thank you for helping make that possible.
